CAIMA — Central America Independent Media Archive
A regional archive, known as el_Archivo, that preserves the work of Central American independent journalism and makes it securely accessible for research and historical memory. It is one of Kronika’s archives.
- Role
- Founder and collection curator
- Period
- 2023–present
- With
- Kronika

The problem
When an independent outlet closes or is forced into exile, its archive disappears with it. In Central America that has left decades-long gaps in the public record.
What I did
- Founded the archive and curates its collection: which outlets join and how their material is preserved.
- Built partnerships with news outlets, universities and digital preservation specialists.
- Oversees digitization, storage, research and newsroom liaison.
- The project grew, in part, out of preserving four terabytes of elPeriódico’s historical archive.
The result
It now brings together 11 outlets from the region. The goal is to reach 20 by the end of 2026.
